This version of Fly's popular Porsche 911 has been around for some time, but it's a new acquisition for me. When they were first released this was an expensive model, but I spotted this one on ebay, brand new and under half the retail price.

I hope you'll understand, but I couldn't resist the temptation...!

Instead of the usual neat Fly display box, the car is supplied in a fairly smart presentation box. Measuring 210x210x70mm the box isn't as large as some of the other Fly presentation boxes and contains the car, collector's card, a booklet about the car and film, and the movie on a DVD disc.

The car is an almost-standard Fly 911, the 'plain' version without the rear spoiler, and arguably the purest and prettiest of all the 911 variants.

The eye-catching yellow paint of the original car is faithfully reproduced here. The tampo printing is relatively simple, nearly all in black. Both paint and tampo are flawless as far as I can tell.

As on the real car, Fly's model is modified with the addition of cameras front and rear. The rear camera slots into place, designed to be easily removed if you don't want to risk damaging it while using the car. The front camera is more solidly fixed (two welds) but could be removed in a couple of minutes if necessary. If you intend to use this (or any) Fly 911 for serious racing it's probably also worth removing the pretty but oh-so-delicate door mirror.

The chassis is identical to the other 911S and 934 Porsches, so I'm not going to go into much detail here. Because of the rear-mounted motor you almost have to add weight to the front of the car to balance it, especially for running without magnets. The front axle needed 2-3mm trimmed off so the wheels don't touch the arches. I've also trimmed a millimetre or two off the underside of the guide mount, just to get the front of the car sitting a little lower. It's for looks rather than dynamics, but I suppose it lowers the centre of gravity too.

I really enjoy the Fly Porsches on my routed track. All of them, 935, 934 and 911 handle nicely with about 10 grams of weight up front. They're quiet, smooth and fairly quick, and just so much fun. Definitely some of my favourite cars.

Understandably, this is a niche model that won't appeal to everyone, but many dealers are now offering discounted prices so there are bargains to be had. The movie DVD is either a nice bonus or an advertising gimmick, depending on your point of view.

But to my way of thinking this is an interesting car and I'm pleased I bought it.
