TARN MODEL FOUNDRY FIGURES

Tarn Model Foundry are a small UK-based company, who have recently released a range of figures for slot car tracks. The initial range is small, but more figures are planned.

How many times have you bought a set of 5 or 6 figures that included at least one that you didn't want? I know I have! Tarn's figures are sold individually, allowing you to buy only what you want. I understand that different head and body combinations will be available, adding more variety and flexibility to the range.

Rather than add yet another pit crew set to those already available, they have opted to release a range of spectator and marshal figures instead.

The figures are cast in white metal, with separate heads as mentioned. Each figure has a peg on one foot so you can use the supplied base or attach the figure directly to your track baseboard. Personally I like this idea because I want to be able to place the figures by my track without bases, and the peg adds extra stability when doing this.

The figures need a light clean up with a knife or file, but no more than you would expect on any white metal models. The parts fit together neatly and the level of detail is good, comparable to the likes of SRA. You don't get the very intricate detail you would find on a (much more expensive) white metal 1/35 military model, but you get a very presentable, very useable figure.

The marshal still needs a flag and a coat of matt varnish, but I hope you'll agree he looks pretty good. The spectator figure below is finished and I'm really pleased with this one, a nice accessory for any type of track.

The two fire marshals were both given quick and simple paintjobs, just to show you can get decent results without spending hours!

Also just released is a rather nice marshals/pit accessory set comprising a broom (not shown) and a variety of fire extinguishers.

It's always interesting when a new company comes along, especially when they're offering something fresh and different. I think Tarn Model Foundry have got the balance about right - the figures are detailed enough to look great when painted well, but they're also easy to work with and to get an acceptable result without being an expert painter.

Prices are expected to be around £3.00 per figure, which offers good value for money in my opinion. As far as I know, the figures are so far only available by ordering from the company's website - www.tarnmodelfoundry.co.uk

I've enjoyed working with these models, I think they'll make a great addition to any track.
